Flyers re-sign goalie prospect Felix Sandstrom to 2-year contract

Felix Sandstrom will be back in the Flyers’ goaltending picture, which has started to come more into focus.

The 25-year-old netminder re-signed with the club Thursday to a two-year, $1.55 million contract. The Swedish prospect was set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

Sandstrom’s deal is a two-way contract in Year 1 and a one-way contract in Year 2, while the average annual value of it is $775,000.

The 2015 third-round draft pick was called upon for five starts this season. On a team that had little stability and surrendered 3.59 goals per game, Sandstrom held his own in net. Despite not picking up a win (0-4-1), he recorded a .910 save percentage along with a 3.23 goals-against average. His best performance came in his NHL debut Dec. 30, when he converted 43 saves in the Flyers’ 3-2 overtime loss to the Sharks.

“Felix Sandstrom, to me, took a big step,” Flyers general manager Chuck Fletcher said at his end-of-the-season press conference May 3. “He’s battled some injuries in previous years. I thought he took a big step, he played better and better as the year went along in Lehigh Valley. I thought he came up and played pretty well under the circumstances and got some valuable experience.”

Come the start of training camp in September, Sandstrom will battle for the Flyers’ backup job, along with prospect Ivan Fedotov. The 6-foot-7 Russian is also 25 years old and had an impressive 2021-22 season, which included a run at the 2022 Beijing Olympics.

Will those two have competition from a veteran? We’ll see.

It’s uncertain if the Flyers want to spend money this offseason on an experienced No. 2 to Carter Hart.

Martin Jones, Hart’s 32-year-old backup, is a pending unrestricted free agent.

“I think for me I just need to wait and see,” Jones said April 30 after the season.

Free agency opens July 13 at noon ET.
